English Translation

In the marriage contract received by Notary Lacombe, Laurent Cabos emancipates his son Jean from paternal authority and gives him 2 pieces of land sown with wheat.

(They will live together in the house.)

Protestant Wedding in Hiding

The wedding on February 8, 1760 was blessed by Pastor Lafond and recorded in the Protestant register of Montauban (1757-1764). Since Protestantism had been banned since 1685, this was an illegal "Desert wedding" (mariage au Désert).

Significance: Jean Cabos - Etienne's Brother

Important Discovery

This document proves that Etienne Cabos had at least one brother named Jean!

Jean Was NOT the Executed Brother

New Finding: Death Certificate 1796

The discovery of the death certificate from November 4, 1796 proves that Jean Cabos was not executed. He lived 36 years after his marriage and died peacefully in Caussade during the French Revolution.

The Bulletin of 1907 claims that Etienne's "older brother" was executed in Caussade. Jean cannot have been this brother.

Jean's Life Dates

Event Date Age (estimated)
Marriage February 3/8, 1760 approx. 25-30 years
Death November 4, 1796 approx. 60-65 years

Jean thus lived another 34 years after the Rochette affair (1762) and did not die until the French Revolution - presumably of natural causes.

Implication for Research

If the 1907 Bulletin is correct and a brother of Etienne's was executed, then it must be a third brother - neither Etienne nor Jean.

Open Questions

  • Third brother?: Did the Cabos family have other sons besides Etienne and Jean?
  • Jean's birth date: When was Jean born? Was he older or younger than Etienne (b. 1737)?
  • Death certificate details: What does the death certificate reveal about Jean's life and family?
  • Court records: Are there records in the Archives du Parlement de Toulouse about another "Cabos"?

Social Network

The witnesses at the wedding show a network of merchants and bourgeois:

  • Teulières - Cousins, one as merchant (négociant)
  • Lacombe - Cousin, practitioner (possibly related to the notary)
  • Thuet - Uncle of the bride, bourgeois
  • Fournier - Family of the bride, bourgeois

The Thuet family is particularly interesting: The 1907 Bulletin mentions a Thomas Thuet who corresponded with J.-M. Palmié in Berlin!
