Description

On January 24, 1793, the family's last son was born in Berlin: Charles Emmanuel. The baptism took place on February 1 at the French Reformed Friedrichstadt Church - the "Französischer Dom" (French Cathedral) at Gendarmenmarkt.

The Father as "Dentiste"

Notable is the father's occupation: "Dentiste, natif de Caussade en Querci" - "Dentist, native of Caussade in Quercy".

This raises questions:

  • Had Etienne learned a new profession?
  • Was "Dentiste" merely a more honorable designation for his work?
  • Had he already acquired medical knowledge in Rotterdam or Stettin?

His family's connections to surgeons (his godfather was a master surgeon, as was Joseph Laens at his parents' wedding) suggest that medical knowledge was present in the family.

The High-Ranking Godparents

The godparents show that the family had connections to higher circles despite their difficult past:

  • Charles Emanuel Baron de Hoffstaedt - Privy Councilor
  • Agnes Louise Amelie Palmie, née Rauch - from a distinguished family

The Friedrichstadt Church

The French Reformed Friedrichstadt Church at Gendarmenmarkt was the center of the Huguenot community in Berlin. Approximately 6,000 Huguenots had settled here between 1685 and 1700, at times making up one-fifth of the population.

For a family like the Cabos, joining this community was a natural step - they found a familiar environment here, a known language, and a network of fellow believers.
