Etienne Cabos as Dentist in Halle (1794-1798)

A scholarly study by Thomas Nickol on dental care provision in Halle documents Etienne Cabos as one of ten dentists who offered their services in the city between 1780 and 1810.

The Original Advertisements

The first advertisement appeared in the Wöchentliche Hallische Anzeigen on March 27, 1794:

On Dental Prostheses:

"Uebrigens setzt er auch Zähne ein, ohne den geringsten Schmerz, welche so fest an dem Gaumen halten, als die besten natürlichen Zähne."

He also inserts teeth without the slightest pain, which hold as firmly to the palate as the best natural teeth.

On his Mouthwash:

"[Er] verfertiget auch ein köstliches Wasser wider den Skorbut und alle nur erdenklichen Unreinigkeiten der Zähne... das herrlichste zusammenziehende Wasser..., durch welches das Zahnfleisch gesäubert, rein gemachet und zum neuen Wachsthume gebracht wird; auch hat es die Eigenschaft, den üblen Geruch aus dem Munde gänzlich zu vertreiben."

He also prepares an exquisite water against scurvy and all conceivable impurities of the teeth... this most excellent astringent water, through which the gums are cleansed, purified and brought to new growth; it also has the property of completely dispelling foul breath from the mouth.

On his Toothache Remedy:

"ein sehr heilbares Wasser für alle möglichen Zahnschmerzen, welches sogleich die grausamen Schmerzen vertreibt."

A very curative water for all possible toothaches, which immediately dispels the most terrible pains.

In the second advertisement, Cabos emphasized the "naturalness" of his dental prostheses:

"[Cabos] macht hierdurch bekannt; daß er neue Zähne, wie sie die Natur giebt, einsetze."

Cabos hereby makes known that he inserts new teeth, such as Nature provides.

Scholarly Context

Thomas Nickol places the advertisements in their contemporary context:

Dental Prostheses

The emphasis on "naturalness" was an important selling point at the end of the 1790s. Nickol notes:

"That 'naturalness' was an important requirement for dental prostheses at the end of the 1790s can also be discerned from the advertisements of Cabos. Whilst in 1794 he only undertook to insert teeth painlessly and as 'firmly as natural ones', in 1798 he promised teeth 'such as Nature intended'."

The teeth used for prostheses often came from hippopotamus ivory or from human cadavers, which made such advertising promises appear ambivalent to readers.

Fillings

Cabos used the technique of plombiren (filling). Nickol explains that this did not necessarily mean the use of lead, as tin foil was a cheap and easy-to-handle material.

Traveling Dentist

Cabos belonged to the traveling dentists who visited Halle. Most came from outside Prussia, with home locations often over 100 km away. Berlin (approximately 150 km) was his place of residence. Only three practitioners visited Halle more than once - Cabos was one of them (twice).

Significance for Family History

This source confirms that Etienne Cabos, after his arrival in Berlin (1792), was indeed active as a dentist (Dentiste) - as also noted in the baptismal record of his son Charles Emmanuel in 1793.

The advertisements show:

  1. Professional Activity: Cabos was not just a "Dentiste" in name, but offered a complete spectrum of dental treatments
  2. Traveling Practice: He traveled from Berlin to Halle to treat patients there
  3. Business Acumen: He advertised in the local press and marketed his own products (mouthwash, toothache remedy)
  4. Continuity: The visits in 1794 and 1798 demonstrate a multi-year practice
